Overview

  • Brewery: Strathcona Beer Company
  • Beer Style: Fruit, IPA
  • Pros:

Rich, full bodied and flavourful IPA that is distinct from most anything else out there

  • Cons:

Overall too earthy and what hops are noticeable just barely contain the strong malt profile

  • Conclusion:

A unique beer that struggles to qualify as an IPA yet still shows plenty of fruit and richness from the malts and cherries

Strathcona Beer Company – Cherry IPA Review

Strathcona Beer Company Cherry IPA CanStrathcona Beer Company brings out their Cherry IPA, an intersting and uncharacteristic take on the IPA style.  The beer pours an opaque mahogany  with one finger of brown head leaving plenty of lacing behind in the glass.  The aroma is of rich malts, dark fruits, plum, cherry and a prominent earthy aroma.  In the mouth, the flavour is of bitter chocolate, wood, earth and dark fruit.  Hints of molasses lead into the slightest of hop presences, but these are quickly overtaken by the strong malt character.  The Cherry IPA is a full-bodied beer that with the full-malt profile could almost be a porter, but for a the working hard to just barely keep things in balance.

Alcohol – 7.3%
Size – 473mL

It’s not often that I seriously consider dumping a beer after the first few tastes, but this was one. No detectable hops (even if it hadn’t been billed as an IPA, this would have been disappointing), weird metallic tinge that might have been hinting at the idea of sour cherry, and an unpleasant malt-liquor-corn-syrup vibe that was too thin and chemical to add any interest.
