Local Brewery’s Nanaimo-Inspired Beer Shines on the World Stage

Nanaimo, BC – White Sails Brewing returned home from London with the title of “World’s Best” in hand after an impressive showing at the 2017 World Beer Awards.

The downtown Nanaimo brewery’s locally inspired beers shone on the world stage, with its Snake Island Cascadian Dark Ale earning the title of World’s Best Black IPA. The full-flavoured ale earned Best Canadian Black IPA honours before going on to challenge the world’s best, edging out beers from the United States, Belgium, and the UK for World’s Best honours. Before heading home, White Sails added another title to its collection, as its Mount Benson India Pale Ale won a Canadian Gold Medal in the IPA category.

“From our very first batch, we wanted our beer to be an expression of this incredible place we live in,” said Brewmaster Tyler Papp. “This kind of recognition shows us we’re on the right track. The awards represent another step in White Sails’ evolution and growth as an island destination for craft beer.”

Opened in 2015, White Sails operates one of the smallest production breweries on the Island, and focuses on brewing locally inspired beer for its large, West Coast-style Taproom and distribution to local retailers. The downtown Taproom has quickly grown into a community gathering place, reflecting and celebrating the local art and culture of Nanaimo, known for hosting a number of community events, ranging from the weekly Friday Night Cask Nights to large community concerts.
White Sails’ run at the 2017 World Beer Awards is not over yet, as Papp looks forward to the announcement of “World’s Best” beers on Sept. 21. There, the Snake Island CDA will be pitted against other style winners to determine the world’s eight best beers of 2017.
