Brewed with Black Currants and barrel aged the Powell Brewery has released their Saison Cassis. This beer comes in at 6.5% alcohol and 23 IBUs. Pouring from a 650ml bottle the Cassis is deep and dark in colour with a reddish-brown hue. With one finger of head settling rather quickly the aroma is both sweet and sour with a berry note on the nose. Wheat and Saison-yeast tones come through on the nose adding a lightness to the mix. In the flavour the currant is light up front and adds a complex sweetness as the flavour progresses. The currant flavour is prominent but doesn’t take total control allowing some traditional saison flavour to shine through. Despite being barrel aged there is little-to-now oak character but still remains a flavourful and well crafted Cassis-styled Saison.
