Tree Brewing 2016 Red Wood Barrel Aged Ale ReviewTree Brewing Co. – 2016 Red Wood Wine Barrel Aged Beer Review

If you tried the 2014 release of the Tree Brewing Red Wood Wine Barrel Aged Ale you may think that you know what the 2016 version is like. Well you would be wrong. While the beer comes in the same, painted bottle and is labelled as being nothing more specific than an “Ale”, the 2016 version closer resembles a Porter than the 2014 which was more of an IPA. Pouring the beer from the 750ml bottle this beer is black in colour and has three fingers of lacing, dense head atop the liquid. Smelling the beer it has a lightness to it but with that comes an aroma of molasses, vanilla and toasted oak. There is almost more of a bourbon hint too than the red wine-cherry tones that you may expect. Tasting the beer it is very light bodied given the colour and description but then again, this is only coming in at 5.0%. The flavour has a mild molasses-oak character and a touch of vanilla and cherry on the tongue. The barrel aging is very distinct but also quite mellow. As a barrel aged, limited edition beer this is lighter than expected in body and intensity but simultaneously offers an easy drinking twist on what could have been a much more intensely flavoured brew. .
