Hearthstone Brewing has done something fairly unique with this beer. They have incorporated Chaga, a fungi from the BC Rainforest into their black lager. From the 355ml can this beer is a very dark brown colour, which appears black from a distance. A single finger of head tops the glass while the beer emits a lightly roasted aroma with an earthy, wood-like character and subtle nutty-coffee notes. The flavour is a blend of the toasted malt character and a nutty, earthy taste. The coffee flavour also comes into play in a subtle way alongside the earthy-nut tones which likely come from the chaga. It would be difficult to put your finger on the flavour content without knowing what went into the beer but the use of Chaga gives this beer a unique flavour and enjoyable element in addition to the black lager base style.

It is quite light but this beer is still a wonderful experiment. I enjoyed every can I drank.
