The Persephone Brewery has brewed a sour beer that they are calling the “West Coast” Sour Ale. Judging from the name you may expect a Cascadian-hop flavour infusion of pine and citrus in this summer seasonal brew. From the bomber sized bottle this sour ale pours a colour of gold with a finger and a half of dense head. The aroma is not what is traditionally attributed to the west coast. Instead of pine and citrus notes this beer has a newer interpretation of west coast flavour in the form of tropical fruit tones. This tropical fruit aroma is often attributed to southern hemisphere grown hops but in this case it is the North American, Mosaic variety. An acidic, sour kick is also apparent in the aroma adding a twist to the somewhat sweet hop aroma. The flavour is balanced with strong sour notes but a malty base that can hold up to the acidity. This also mellows the fairly intense tropical hop tones that came on the nose. Persephone has achieved a smooth balance in this kettle sour, by using a relatively bigger-bodied beer and what seems to be a fairly intense dry-hopping the sour tones come through with some vigor but are counter-balanced by the rest of the beer. This is a very enjoyable sour ale to come from Gibsons BC.
