Central City Brewing Sour II Kriek Sour BottleCentral City Brewing – Sour II Barrel Aged Kriek Sour Review

At long last, Central City Brewing has followed up the release of their Barrel Aged Sour Brown Ale with the Barrel Aged Kriek Sour, made with cherries. The beer pours from the 750mL bottle a deep ruby colour with two fingers of tan head that dissipates fairly slowly leaving no lacing behind on the glass. Aromas of leather and cherries are initially dominant, followed closely by oak tones, and some balsamic vinegar and earthy notes.  In the mouth the beer is woody and presents some sweetness. Flavours of cherries accompany some apple cider vinegar acidity and mix with notes of vanilla, sour cherry, rich malts and some jammy fruit tones. The beer has a medium body that is somewhat surprising given the complexity in flavours, but finishes fairly dry.  Drinkable now, this beer will surely improve with age.

I had some again at Great Canadian Beer Fest and am still impressed. Still feel it needs more time, but it’s definitely got a good base to build upon.
