The lighter side of craft beer comes to us from Four Winds Brewing in the form of their Notus series of low-ABV, approachable beers. The Elementary Lager is such a beer at 4.5% alcohol and 25 IBUs.  This beer pours from the bomber bottle a colour of straw and is topped with two fingers of head which settles leaving light lacing behind. Smelling the Elementary Lager it emits an aroma of grass, light citrus and German malt. The beer smells light and traditional by lager standards. The flavour is malt forward and has more of a body than you may expect given the low alcohol. The malt character has a light grassiness and citrus that goes with it but that all disappears in the finish. A rather strong hop-bitterness builds near the finish of this beer and takes over the flavour. What seems like greater than 25 IBUs leaves the palate in a bitter state as you reach for another sip of this light, northwest style lager.
