Craft Beer Shines in the South Okanagan

Penticton, BC. The craft beer movement is growing at an unprecedented rate in Penticton, the South Okanagan, throughout BC and beyond. If you are looking to get together with other craft beer fans, learn more about the craft or simply enjoy sipping on a fresh, crisp ale check out the Campaign for Real Ale South Okanagan (CAMRA SO). CAMRA SO is the newest branch of CAMRA BC, a well-known craft beer organization with branches in Vancouver, Victoria, Powell River, South Fraser and now the South Okanagan.

Kim Lawton, President of CAMRA SO explained, “If you like craft beer, there are more and more awesome things happening in the South Okanagan, with new beers, new breweries, great craft-beer focused events and beer-paired dinners. We are excited to have a group of people all interested in craft beer get together for special events and to talk about and enjoy craft beer.”

To learn more about CAMRA South Okanagan head to a special event at The Tin Whistle Brewing Company on Wednesday May 18th from 5:30-7:30pm. Lawton continued, “This event is a great way to check out CAMRA SO, learn more about craft beer and try some unique hand-crafted beers. We’ll have a special guest at the event,

Adam Chatburn from Real Cask Vancouver, who is bringing a cask of a traditional mild he made. It’s 3% ABV called Burnley B*stard. Adam said it’s a classic dark mild with only light bittering fuggles hops. Guests to the event are invited to enjoy a sample of this cask beer by donation to help support the Fort McMurray relief efforts.”

Guests will also have a chance to try a cask of Black Widow made by Tin Whistle Brewmaster Jeff Todd. Todd explained, “The Black Widow is a modern retelling of a traditional English style. It is a dark mild, very low hop bitterness or aroma, light bodied with just a hint of chocolate and coffee; the mocha of the beer world. At 5% ABV it is sessionable, but still packs a bit of a punch. This cask is served in the traditional style, just a little priming sugar added; otherwise it is completely unaltered.” Glasses of Tin Whistle’s cask will be available at the event for $5.

There will also be behind the scenes tours of Tin Whistle’s new brewery, located in the Cannery Trade Centre at 1475 Fairview Road in Penticton, and there will be a food truck so you can purchase food to go along with the beer. Plus there will be some door prizes.

While at the event, you’ll be able to meet current CAMRA SO members and the executive members who were recently elected at the CAMRA SO AGM. Derrick Webb (Treasurer), Jackie Del Rizzo (Secretary), Kim Lawton (President), Eike Hinz (Home Brewers Liaison), Chelsea McDowell (Communications), Ian Dyck (Events) and Jon Padgett (VP/Membership).

There has also been interest in setting up a CAMRA Central Okanagan branch. For those interested in finding out more, please or

CAMRA SO memberships will be available for purchase during the event. The annual membership fee is $25/person or $40/couple. Membership benefits include discounts and special offers at craft-beer friendly establishments throughout the South Okanagan and the province.
