East Vancouver’s Off The Rail Brewing Company has brewed a Nut Brown Ale called the East Bound. Nut Brown ales are not as popular as they were a few years back but they are definitely a tasty style. Off The Rail’s rendition of the classic style pours from the bomber bottle a dark brown colour with a finger or so of lightly lacing head. Smelling this beer it has notes of toasted malt, caramel, a slight nuttiness and more malt. The aroma here truly showcases the characteristics of the malts used in the brew. Tasting the beer, the toasted malt tones come in first which lead into a nutty, chocolate flavour that is both balanced and flavourful. The chocolate is mellow but adds a light bitterness to the toasted malt that has a slight but contrasting roasted sweetness. This is a beer that is smooth and easy drinking yet still warms your soul with a toasty and delicious malt character. The Nut Brown is back and Off The Rail is on it!
