Category 12 Brewing Job Posting – Assistant Brewer

category-12-job-postingFeb 16, 2016

Category 12 Brewing is expanding and is looking for an amazing individual to join their brewing team in the April to May timeframe! Category 12 Brewing is located between downtown Victoria and Sidney. We recently celebrated our one year anniversary and in 2015 we won a Canadian Brewing Award Gold Medal for our Disruption Black IPA.

We brew colossal, yet balanced, Belgian and West Coast inspired ales with distinctive personalities. We have a deep respect for the science behind the craft of brewing and are obsessed with microbes and geeky details. We’re inspired by boundary-pushing breweries such as Stone, Russian River and Dogfish Head. Constant experimentation and innovation is at the heart of who we are and we’ve recently started a barrel-aging program. 2016 promises to be an exciting year with lots in store!

In this role, you will work closely with the founder and head brewer. The bulk of your time will be focused on the production of high quality, top notch, tasty-as-hell craft beer that never compromises or panders to the masses.

Primary responsibilities:
• All facets of brewing, cellar and yeast management including performing yeast viability assays
o Brewing – we have a Canadian made 15HL two vessel system fabricated only 1 km away by Specific Mechanical Systems
o Tank transfers, and cleaning
o Packaging (bottling and kegging)
o Recording and maintaining records
o Spearhead the writing of Standard Operating Procedures
• Manage and track ingredient and chemical inventories
o Forecast and communicate needed orders in a proactive fashion
• Willingness to achieve and maintain high standards of quality

Secondary responsibilities:
• Participate in the implementation of a barrel aging and yeast propagation program
• Recipe development – let’s get the pilot system cranking out some crazy delicious beers that we can roll out on our R&D tap and spin into seasonal releases for 2016/17
• Implement and conduct QA/QC tests

The successful candidate must be details oriented, out-going, able to think on their feet and multi-task while maintaining an extreme level of attention to detail. You must also have an innate desire to see jobs through to completion. We’re looking to add someone to our close knit team that is a good fit. We value people who exhibit day-to-day enthusiasm, commitment, and a desire to work hard and learn new skills – after all, we get to make beer for a living!

We also know we have things to learn, so be prepared to bring new ideas to the table. Continual improvement is welcome and we realize no process is ever perfected – although we will endlessly strive for it!

Also, we’re a startup brewery – so we all do a bit of everything, and that will be expected of this role as well. At times, you will be required to perform some local deliveries, pour at the odd event, serve bar in “The Lab” (our growler shop) and generally be awesome.

Please send your resume along with a cover letter that conveys why you are passionate about craft beer and think you’d be a good addition to our team to moc.gniwerb21yrogetacobfsctd@werbotevili

This job posting will remain open until March 15, 2016.
