Central City Brewing – Barrel Aged Sour Brown Ale Review

Central City Brewing’s barrel aging program has produced its first sour: a sour brown ale.  They say good things come to those who wait, and this beer has been waiting 2 years to be enjoyed.  The beer pours from the 750mL bottle a deep and clear mahogany with 2 fingers of quickly dissipating head.  The aroma is of oak and earth, and subtle wine grape notes that mingle with the sour funk.  The sour nose evokes an impression of a big and bold sour, extremely tart on the tongue, but the beer produces far less than the expected tartness and instead proves to be very mellow.  There is a mild alcohol aroma that makes itself known only faintly.  On the palate the beer is fairly complex but not unapproachable.  Oak and earth are immediately present, followed by subtle fruity notes, and then replaced by a tannic acidity, a likely product of the beer being aged in Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels for 20 months.  The beer leaves a slight bitterness on the tongue for the finish that dissipates quickly, replaced by a lingering dryness.  The 9.2% alcohol is well disguised and does not come through in the mouth at all.  This sour may not please everyone but is still accessible enough for most people to find something that they will enjoy.  The limited release of this beer is sure to sell very quickly so get your hands on it if you can.
