Barkerville Brewing Co. – Paydirt Cascadian Dark Ale Review
The Barkerville Brewing Company has brewed up a new beer called the Paydirt which is a Cascadian Dark Ale, or CDA. From the bomber sized bottle this big, 8.1% alcohol beer pours as a very deep, amber colour with a finger and a half of head which leaves slight lacing on the glass as it settles. The beer has an aroma of toasted malt, citrus hop and a light booze-factor. The beer smells big and intense but not as hoppy or as dark as you may expect for a CDA. Tasting the beer it has a mid body and tastes of toasted malt, caramel and a slight toffee note. The hop factor builds in the finish with a very dry, big-bitter hit that overpowers the caramel sweetness that came earlier. Surprisingly the booziness does not really come despite the big ABV rating. The Paydirt is a big, strong and hoppy beer but not quite what you may expect for the CDA style. That is no reason not to try it though!
Alcohol – 8.1%
Size – 650ml bottle
