Canoe Brewpub ESB Review Canoe Brewpub – Extra Special Bitter Review

One of the Canoe Brewpub’s staple beers is their Extra Special Bitter. This beer used to be called the River Rock Bitter but has shifted slightly since being renamed the E.S.B.. This beer comes from the bottle appearing as a crisp and clear amber-copper colour and is topped with a baby finger’s worth of head. What little head does appear gives a slight lacing on the glass as it settles. The beer smells malty and smooth with a light English Style hop to it. Notes of biscuit and caramel make the beer slightly sweet while also rather mellow. A low and fairly British carbonation factor hits the tongue in a fairly big bodied ESB. The flavour is big with malt notes and surprisingly there is almost a touch of chocolate on the palate. Paired with a caramelized sweetness and distinct English hop bitterness the flavour is distinct and rather big for the aroma and style. Even the bitterness seems bigger than the modest 15IBUs. Overall the beer is a low carbonation, big flavoured English style Extra Special Bitter.
