R&B Releases Weizenbock in Mt Pleasant Limited Release Series

Mt Pleasant Series Weizenbock. Another East Vancouver Original From R&B Brewing

R&B Brewing Weizenbock ReleaseR&B, the original East Van brewery is proud to announce it’s new series of beer, created in the pioneering spirit of their east side location. It was 18 years ago that R&B made it’s home in the Mt Pleasant neighbourhood, so it was highly fitting to name its newly inspired brews — The Mt Pleasant East Vancouver Original Series. These fun, flavour forward and feisty beers celebrate the diverse and eclectic brewing district with limited release ‘juice’ that promises a rotational variety of unique styles and flavours.

There will be feature releases throughout the year, seasonally brewed, with limited availability. The first in the series was the Roggenbier, and now following in its traditional November brewing period is the Weizenbock Wheat Ale.

HISTORY OF WEIZENBOCK

Weizenbock was first brewed in 1907, with pioneering ingenuity that brought together a strong, dark and malty Bavarian style beer with an emerging style — weissbier . Few beers combine so prolifically as the two different styles to create a weizenbock, with banana, clove and vanilla aromas and flavours, balanced by a firm backbone of malt.

Comparable to the barley based Bockbier, a Weizenbock is the strong version of an unfiltered Weissbier or Hefeweizen. It is usually made with 60 to 70% wheat malt (German law required that a Weizenbeir be made from at least 50% wheat). They are pale to amber, and sometimes lightly caramelized barley malts that give the beer a full-bodied mouthfeel, a rich and satisfying malty finish. While Bockbiers are lagers, Weizenbocks are all ales. They are fermented with a special yeast that gives the brew a slightly spicy, clove like flavour.

Strength is usually in the range of 6.5 to 9.0% ABV, with some extending into the double digits. For sheer complexity they are interesting and hard to beat, especially as a winter warmer.
