Old Abbey Ales Belgian Pale Ale Review Old Abbey Ales – Belgian Pale Ale Review

Old Abbey Ales’ Innovation Series of limited release beers has a new face – the Belgian Pale Ale. A twist on tradition this is a Brettanomyces brewed beer that joins both Pale Ale and Belgian traditions into a unique twist. From the 650ml bomber bottle the beer pours as an Amber colour with a finger and a half of loosely packed head. A funky-farmhouse like aroma comes from the beer with notes of orange and papaya giving a fruity, light sweetness to the very funky-Belgian smelling beer. The taste is less funky than you may expect but the Brett-yeast has a strong influence on the flavour. A lightly sweet, citrus flavour comes through with a touch of sweetness and a growing mild hop bitterness. The Brett rings true through the entire flavour but leaves a lightness near the finish that is filled with a delicate, bitter hop tone that lingers behind.
