The Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers have released their first Cellar Series Beer as an Oud Bruin. This wax-dipped, 7.6% alcohol beer comes in a 750ml bottle and can be enjoyed today but may jest be even better a year or so from now. From the bottle this classic styled beer pours as a dark, reddish brown colour with a single finger of head which settles quickly and without a trace. From the Deep Cove Oud Bruin comes a strong and complex aroma of sour cherries, wine oak, and a sour-earthiness that can only be understood by those that have tried a good old fashioned Oud Bruin. The body is relatively light off the bat but as the flavour progresses so does the body. Right off the bat a bubbly, cherry sourness hits the tongue before a woodsy-earthy tone builds up behind. While the aroma had a wine note to it the flavour reveals an aging in what tastes like bourbon barrels. The oakiness does not lead the charge off the bat but slowly builds throughout the tasting leaving the palate with a warm, slightly boozy wood flavour on the finish. For an Oud Bruin the flavour is quite smooth and rather mellow but still a complex and quite delicious beer. The Oud Bruin style is not all that common in BC but when it arrives, craft beer drinkers unite – and start to horde.
