From Port Moody BC’s Yellow Dog Brewing Company is the Old Dog Altbier. At 5.0% alcohol and 33 bittering units (IBU) this is surely a sessionable beer for the summer ahead. This beer has big shoes paws to fill however as it’s big brother, the Smoked Porter made quite the stir among BC craft beer fans. The Old Dog has some new tricks however as it pours from the bomber bottle as an amber-copper colour topped with two fingers of loosely packed, lightly lacing head. From this Altbier comes a malty nose with notes of caramel, toffee and light dried fruit. The smell is still rather light and crisp but these back-notes add a nice diversity to the aroma. The flavour is crisp and well-carbonated with a toasted malt body. Light dried fruit and caramel tones give a complexity to the flavour while also giving a refreshing sweetness to the brew. The Old Dog is a bigger than typical Altbier but has great body, depth of flavour and a crispness that will surely become a favourite for the summer ahead.
