Townsite Brewing Le Chatelier Sour Belgian Review Townsite Brewing Inc. – Le Chatelier Sour Belgian Ale Review

The Belgian roots of Townsite Brewing Inc’s brewmaster Cedric are emerging, this time with the new, Sour Belgian Ale calle Le Chatelier. This is the first bottled sour beer to be released from Powell River’s Townsite Brewery and comes in at 14 IBUs and 6.0%. This wood-aged sour beer pours from the bomber bottle as an amber colour topped with a single finger of head. The aroma from this beer is not what you may expect. An earthiness hits the nose but not one of strong Belgian tones or sour ones. A light yeast-like aroma along with a unique, slightly sharp maltiness comes in the smell. The flavour kicks things off with a crisp, lightly sour flavour similar to that of a Berliner Weisse. Not what you may think of for a Belgian Sour the Chatelier is crisp, fresh and adds a light sour note to a beer that has a body balanced by an earthy, woody tone provided by the aging. This is by no means a typical sour but there is not much typical about Powell River, Townsite Brewery or Cedric the man behind the beer. This is a unique and flavourful, gateway sour that unsuspecting craft beer drinkers may just come to love. Keep an eye out for the Le Chatelier, it is a light, fresh and unique twist on a sour beer.
