Moon Under Water has decided to make the leap and brew their first sour beer. In a paper-wrapped, clear bottle this sour ale pours from the 750ml package as a very dark, nearly black colour with a slight reddish tinge. A finger and a half of very tightly packed, dark head settles moderately fast leaving no signs of lacing on the glass. The aroma is deep and dark with a smoked cherry nose. Not as sharp as your average sour, a bit of chocolate-oakiness in the aroma adds a smoothness and complexity to the beer’s nose. In the flavour, the first hit is rather sharp with a sour-cherry flavour. This initial hit mellows into a lightly smokey, chocolate-oak-like finish which is very unique and quite smooth for the style. This beer could almost be described as a hybrid between a sour and a stout given the body and flavours. While you may think this beer would age well the clear bottle could be taken as a subtly hint not to. If you decide to keep a bottle for a while though, best to keep the paper wrapper on and the bottle out of the light. It say’s right on the label, “Limited Edition, (Seriously, we’re only making this once) so if you want to give it a try – this is your chance!
