Craft Beer Hop Profile – Topaz Hops
The Topaz hop is not the best known variety but plays a major part in flavouring some of our favourite BC Craft Beers. Originating from Australia way back in 1985 the Topaz Hop exhibits the tropical fruit tones that we often find in higher gravity craft beer. The Topaz hop is best known for its splendid aroma including notes of citrus and apricot and a mild clove spice.
The Topaz hop is brewed with for its delicious flavour profile but also as a high Alpha-Acid hop. This high Alpha Acid content created during the brewing process contributes to the strong bitterness in the beer being brewed. Having been around since the mid 1980s the Topaz Hop did not gain popularity until around 2006 when the aroma and northwest flavour tendencies really started to grow in North American taste preferences. The Topaz is a staple among BC brewers and we owe much of the fantastic beer available today to this delicious and versatile hop.
