Eastbound for Craft Beer, A Walk Through the Fernie Brewing Company

2014_07_BCBEERTRIP-2468The Fernie Brewing Company sits practically on the Alberta border in South-Eastern British Columbia. This brewery may seem way out there but they have been making waves through BC and Alberta since opening some 15 years ago.

For a small mountain town, Fernie is home to a rather large craft brewery and this craft brewery is about to get even bigger. The beer has shifted direction recently with new branding, increased distribution and with a new brewhouse being installed even more change is on the horizon. Doubling their capacity means that soon, even more delicious Fernie beer will be at your fingertips.

The beer at Fernie consists of some staples that have been around the block a few times and an emerging line of brews giving a unique and innovative twist on the tradition that built Fernie into the brewery that it is today. The Willy Wit, Sap Sucker and Buck Wild are beers that you may recognize but if you are on your game you may know them more recently for the breakout seasonal IPA series including popular (and sold out) hits suck as the Rockpile,Quiet Rye’t and most recently Last Cast. In addition to the bottled success a move to increase canning has allowed for even more people to enjoy the Fernie Beer experience with increased distribution and a more portable product.

In the limited release series of IPAs Fernie has been able to capture the attention of BC IPA fanatics but also differentiate the brewery in creating unique, sessionable and extremely delicious IPAs consistently and regularly. The original idea behind the series was to be short lived but with a pied-piper-like following trailing behind the path of hops this series is charging onwards and sure to be the source of more delicious inspiration down the road.

When you visit the Fernie Brewing Company you will be greeted by a large and inviting building with chair-lift seating out front. Inside is a contemporary and comfortable area where thirst can be quenched through the many different beers on tap. The Fernie Brewing Company does not have a lounge license for the premises you you will be limited to a 12oz sampling while you are there but do not fret, growler fills, cans and bottles are all available on site for you to enjoy after a long day on the Rocky Mountain slopes.

The Fernie Brewing Company is no stranger to competition having ridden through the growth of both BC and Alberta craft beer. With a growing market, enthused local community and two provinces embracing their focus on consistency and innovation Fernie is on the up-and-up with a larger capacity just around the corner and more delicious craft beer on its way.
