What starts with F and ends with K?

Fire Truck and it’s just one of the places you can get a taste of Victoria’s newest Craft Beer.

Press Release from 4 Mile Brewing Co.
firetruck-300x300August 20, 2014 – A vigorous grapefruit spank, a robust nutty whack, a crispy tart bombshell or a stiff upper sip are just some of the descriptions of the Four Mile Brewing Company’s new craft beer, now being poured from a retired and reimagined fire truck around town and sold in bottles at forty-one locations throughout the island and on the lower mainland, with more coming on board almost everyday.

BC’s newest craft brewery is owned by the Haymes family, who also own the Four Mile Brewpub in View Royal, in Victoria’s west end. The brewery was installed in January of 2014, and on February 6, 2014 served its first in-house brewed pint of craft beer. The bottled craft beers were initially sold only in the Four Mile Liquor Store but over the spring and summer demand and distribution have increased dramatically.

“The response has been really amazing, said Graham Hayes, proprietor. “When we came to market, it was with beers that we had starting serving in our Brewpub so we knew the taste was right and next we needed every aspect of each brew personalities to live in and on the bottle. I believe our team nailed it, it is hard to keep on the shelves.”

Brewmaster Alan Pugsley brews in the traditional English fashion, using only barley, wheat, hops and pure water with yeast from a centuries-old strain developed by monks in the British Isles.

The new graphic design for the beer bottle labels, posters, website, and collateral materials was done by Andrew Lewis of Andrew Lewis Design. Lewis teamed with writer Su Grimmer to help evolve the quirky fun personality, which reflects the attitude of 4 Mile Brewing Company.

4 Mile Brewing Company presently produces 8 types of ales and 7 of those are now available in 650ml bottles- Golden, Pale, Brown, IPA, Best British, Summer Wheat and English Strong. All are available on tap and in Growlers at the Four Mile Brewpub. The team is currently at work on new season fall releases, including Bourbon Barrel Aged ale and a Sweet Potato spiced ale.

The 4 Mile Craft Brewery is the next evolution in a long and colourful history. Four Mile House is one of the oldest “public houses” in the Victoria region. Built in 1858, the building has gone through myriad iterations over its tenure at the corner of Island Highway and View Royal Avenue. From a carriage stop rest-station for travelers enroute to Sooke – it is four miles from Beacon Hill Park to Four Mile House, ergo the origin of the name – to a brothel, hang-out for bootleggers, traders, resident ghosts, and a long-time naval military watering hole, and “the local” for generations of residents in the west end. Purchased in 1980 by Graham and Wendy Haymes, Four Mile House has expanded over their 30 plus years of ownership. Today it is a landmark destination English style pub, serving traditional British pub fare with West Coast flair and now craft beer.
