Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub – Hoptoria IPA Review
The Hoptoria is an IPA coming from the Victoria based Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub. First brewed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of BC’s capital city this once stood out as a beer that pushed the boundaries of craft while now it is a great tasting pacific northwest style IPA with a fairly high IBU of 80. Pouring from the bottle the Hoptoria is a light amber colour that enters the glass with a thin finger of head which leaves light lacing on the glass as it settles. Through this thin top comes a slightly piney hop bitterness with notes of mango and passionfruit along side. A light caramel sweentess also becomes apparent on the nose. The flavour starts off light and builds quickly into a hop bitterness. The flavours of mango and passionfruit are present but not as much as the scent forcasted. The bitterness of the hop masks this slightly but with the light caramel sweetness an IBU of 80 seems a touch high. Despite the high IBU rating the beer is still rather refreshing and quaffable. The Hoptoria is a great west coast IPA that can be enjoyed by just about any hop-head out there.
