Phillips Schottleweizen Dark Saison Review

Phillips Brewing Co. – Schottleweizen Dark Saison

Phillips has taken to adventuring in wheat and with a dark twist. The Schottleweizen is a dark, wheat beer. Described as as brewed with Saisonal yeast and darkness. This strong beer pours a deep, lightly clouded colour topped with two thick fingers of head. The aroma is of wheat, traditional Saison, orange peal and a touch of spice. The taste is similar to the scent with a smoothness and darkness running in parallel. Minor chocolate tones add to the orange peal and dark Saison flavours leading up to a very dry finish. Phillips Brewing as achieved a unique and dark beer while maintaining the sessionability of a summer Saison.

In my opinion this fits the style “Dunkelweizen” very well, this is actually the best BC brewed one I ever had. Is dark saison actually a style?

Great point Frank, The beer does resemble that of a Dunkel but a Saison is an Ale while a Dunkelweizen is actually a lager. The flavours have similarities but the beers are still quite different.
