Granville Island Shamrocker Potato Stout Review

Granville Island Brewing Co. – Shamrocker Potato Stout

In the line of Vern Lambourne’s own Black Note Book Series of signature beers comes the Shamrocker, a Potato Stout. This beer pours from the bottle a jet black colour letting only the slightest of light through. Topping this very dark beer is two full fingers of thick, lacing, slow to settle head. The aroma is quite dark with strong coffee tones, deep toasted malts and the slightest of starchy-potato-ness. The flavour is lighter than expected with noticeable coffee notes and the flavours of a fairly traditional Irish stout. The potato seems to lighten the beer though with a mild starchiness that makes the darkness of the beer a little easier on the senses. The Shamrocker is a dark beer that has a touch of uniqueness built in. The beer is not out in left field but still offers a slight twist on an Irish favorite.
