Aldergrove, BC — Dead Frog Brewery announced today that head brewer, Tony Dewald, is moving to a new craft brewery that will be established in Abbotsford, BC, this summer. He will be succeeded at Dead Frog by his assistant brewer, Nicholas Fengler.

“I came on with a huge opportunity to improve the beers that Dead Frog produced, as well as create a new line of beers,” said Tony. “I’ve worked with Derrick Smith, the owner, to add new equipment, introduce new yeast strains, improve the quality of ingredients used, and most importantly educate the staff on what quality brewing is all about.”

The Session Vienna Lager is a noteworthy example of what has achieved to date. According to Tony, “It sets itself apart from many other lagers by using a darker, sweeter malt base with a unique blend of Old and New World hops.” The Session won a BC Beer Awards Silver in the Special Lager category.

Tony hands over the brew kettle to Nicholas Fengler who has worked closely with him in bringing the new Dead Frog lineup to market.

“I feel extremely privileged to have worked with Tony,” said Nick. “I have worked intimately with the entire new line of beers and feel confident that the quality, craft, and artistry that Tony brought to Dead Frog will not be lost. I look forward to being able to add my own flair to our new releases.”

Nick has been working on recipes for an ESB, a buckwheat ale, and a golden session ale. Look forward to these coming out in the near future as limited releases in bombers, kegs, and casks.

The management and staff of Dead Frog Brewery wish Tony the best in his new venture and welcome another independent brewery working to expand the craft beer market in the Fraser Valley.

I read this when it was released and was very surprised. It’s a bit shocking that Tony is leaving. I look forward to seeing what Nicolas has to offer though.

Agreed, it is suprising but Tony has done a great job in the transition of the Dead Frog brand. Nicholas will surely do more great things for the brewery in the coming years!

Totally agree on Tony. People that had written off the brand now talk glowingly about their seasonals. It’s a good time to be working at Dead Frog.
