Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers – SFBrew University Brew Off IPA
Back in October, 2013 Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers along with Hops Connect hosted a home-brew competition between the UBC and SFU brewing clubs, SFBrew and BrUBC. The winner of this prestigious competition was awarded the Hops Connect Cup and the opportunity to brew their own beer in a full scale production. SFBrew took home the award and created the University Brew Off IPA. This grassroots-initiated beer pours a cloudy, light-amber colour topped with three fingers of thick and lacing head. Through the foamy top comes the smell with notes of piney, northwest style hop, citrus tones and a lightly sweet malt. While the nose is quite big on the hops it still forecasts a fairly easy drinking IPA. The flavour starts off with citrus notes and a decently thick body. The initial citrus builds into a mid-sweet, big hop middle with northwest style hop tones. Stemming from the Citra, Amarillo and Cascade hops the citrus and piney middle moves back on the tongue with a bitter and dry finish. At 78 IBUs this beer is bitter, strong and big on flavour. It looks like the scholarly thinking at SFU along with the brewing prowess of Deep Cove Brewing has come up with a fantastic BC craft IPA. Get it now though, it will not be around long!
