The Winning Entry – SFBrew’s Winning IPA Becomes a Reality with Hops Connect and Deep Cove Brewers

SFBrew and BrUBC come together to battle for an A+ grade in beer!

1962766_659999567381217_1735874659_nThe hidden world of home brewing has hopped out of the basement and is showing its face to the world. University clubs are even among those experimenting with new flavours, styles and influencing the progression of craft beer as we know it. BC based Hop supplier Hops Connect and North Vancouver’s Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers teamed up to harness the power of local academia and hosted the 2013 University Brew Off back in October of 2013. At this event, UBC’s brUBC and SFU’s S.F.Brew  brewing clubs met up for a judged competition of what they had been experimenting with. Brewing a combined total of 24 beers across 5 judged categories BrUBC took home one award while S.F.Brew was awarded three. The fifth award was a draw between the two teams. Top prize went to the Best In Show beer and was awarded the Hops Connect Cup – This was S.F.Brew’s Hop-A-Rella IPA.

Hop and Vine Taphouse Launch PartyIn addition to bragging rights, the Hops Connect Cup came with something special for the winning team. The S.F.Brew members responsible for the award winning Hop-A-Rella IPA would have the opportunity to brew their beer at the Deep Cove Brewers & Distiller’s North Vancouver location. Also sponsored by Hops Connect the University Brewing Club designed IPA would come to market as the University Brew Off IPA.

Hops Connect Cup winners Natasha Peiskar and Jill Plotnikoff took the opportunity to brew their beer under the guidance and supervision of Deep Cove brewmaster Kevin Emms. Together they tweaked the recipe ever so slightly and brewed a 15hl batch for later release. To see a beer come from the home brew stages to a full scale production is something amazing and this truly shows the potential and innovative thinking found in brewing clubs such as S.F.Brew and BrUBC.

2014_04_BMBC-3419The final product has hit the shelves and can now be purchased at your favourite BC craft beer retailer. Brewed with Cascade, Citra and Amarillo hops the University Brew Off IPA comes in at 78 IBU and an alcohol content of around 7%. This is not the home brew your father made as a kid. This is a fantastic beer that any craft IPA fan will surely enjoy. Pick up a bottle today!

The official beer launch party took place at the Hop & Vine Taphouse in Burnaby British Columbia. If you missed the event, you can still enjoy the beer now!
