The first bottle to be released out of the Vancouver based 33 Acres Brewery is the 33 Acres of Ocean. This is a Westcoast style Pale Ale with a focus on Pacific and Pine. Much like the brewery tasting room this beer has a simple, high contrast label with a sense of sophistication and elegance. The beer itself pours from the 650ml bottle as a rich, golden colour topped with three fingers of loosely packed, lacing head. From this beer comes an aroma of light sweetness, mild piney hop and a malted base for the ordeal. The beer as a whole smells rather light and sessionable with a mild, west coast style hop. The flavour is rather light with reasonably high carbonation. Featuring more malt tones than you would expect from a West Coast Pale ale the beer is rather smooth. As the flavour progresses, a piney hop flavour builds at the back of the mouth. While the bitterness of this hop never truly takes over the sap-like flavours stick to the back of the palate balancing out the earlier malted tones. The sweetness is rather low with a bittered finish making for a lighter than average Pale ale with a defined west coast-style finish.

I found this beer to be quite bland. Impressive label, but zero hop aroma. Another bland BC pale, a la Granville Island or OK Springs. Call me disappointed.
