Driftwood Brewing Co. – 2014 Singularity Russian Imperial Stout Review

The ‘Beer of Infinite Destiny’ is back in 2014. Also known as the Singularity Russian Imperial Stout this Driftwood Brewery brew pushes the limits in every way. Beyond the BC tax bracket for beer this year’s Singularity tips the scales at 14.6%. Comparable with many wines this extremely strong beer is a notch higher than any of the competition. Cracking open the wax topped bottle this beer it sludges out of the bottle thick like tar (not really) and is topped with a little more than two fingers of head. The Singularity smells of molasses, tobacco, caramel and bourbon barrel aged deliciousness. The flavour is similar in a smooth and flavourful package. The molasses and tobacco tones meld well with a bourbon oak flavour that is not as intense as you my expect. The booze is present but not anywhere close to resembling the 14.6% rating indicated. The sharpness that you may expect is also seemingly absent. For being such a young and big beer this is surprisingly drinkable now but will be much, much better with a year or two of aging.

Alcohol – 14.6%
Size – 650ml
Price – $13.60 (Private Liquor Store)

I am hoping to build a 5-10 year vertical, if we are all still around here in that period of time I’ll need some help with that one from people who appreciate good beer :)

I was surprised at how drinkable this one was without any aging too, I thought was really, really good as is so I can’t wait to see what age will produce.
