Dead Frog Brewery – Uber Nutter Imperial Nut Brown Ale Review

Dead Frog has seen a 180 turn over the past year becoming an innovative and creative thinking brewery leading the charge in new styles and manipulations of Craft Beer. Building off the well known Classic Nut Brown Ale the Uber Nutter kicks it up a notch with an imperial stamp and a whopping 9% ABV rating. This ale pours a deep and dark brown colour letting nearly no light through at all. The glass is topped with a finger and a half of head which settles relatively quickly leaving minimal lacing on the glass’ side. Through this head comes strong notes of chocolate, caramel, chestnut, vanilla and a touch of booze. The aroma is quite unique and is closer to that of an imperial stout than that of a brown ale. The flavour kicks off with a big body up front. Chocolate tones fill the palate with a vanilla smoothness building up to a  nutty mid-section. The finish is a little on the boozy side but not like you may expect. The relatively low IBU in this beer helps to mask the alcohol content and if you allow the beer to be drank at a correct – lightly  chilled temperature the alcohol seems to almost disappear. This is a big beer and something not only unique to Dead Frog but to the BC Craft Beer as a whole. An imperial Nut Brown Ale is something special and should capture your attention with a unique and powerful flavour.

I sampled some Dead Frog Brewery at the last Calgary International Beerfest. I thought that it was pretty good; but the idea of an Imperial Brown Ale is really interesting to me. I hope that I can find it out here at one of the local liquor stores.
