Black Kettle Brewery Opens Its Doors in North Vancouver

2014_01_BMBC-0548North Vancouver’s 4th craft brewery opened its doors on January 17th, 2014 as the Black Kettle Brewing Company. Located a stone’s throw away from the North Shore Auto Mall you may not stumble across the brewery without looking for it but it is closer than you may think. Founder and Owner Bryan Lockhart and brewmaster Phil Vandenborre have turned on their taps serving the increasingly thirsty North Vancouver craft beer enthusiast. Opening day was a soft launch with little to no advertising but that was the plan as the small team works out the kinks in the system. Those that were aware of the opening likely found out from the Black Kettle facebook page

2014_01_BMBC-0534Black Kettle has started things off with a Pale Ale as their first craft beer offering. This light and sessionable pale ale comes in at around 4.5% and is on the low side of IBUs by BC standards. We can expect this offering to change slightly recipes are tweaked over the coming months and the staple beer offerings are perfected. Next up in the kettle is a dry hopped IPA and beyond that is limited only by the creativity of brewmaster Phil Vandenborre. In the early days following launch the beer is only available for samples and growler fills at the brewery but bottling is just around the corner. Lining up with the expected release of their IPA, bomber style bottles should be rolling out to select craft retailers by mid February.

2014_01_BMBC-0551The brewery itself is a 12 hectolitre system and only days after opening talk about expanding is already underway. The brewery’s space has room for more equipment and with the fermenter being the limiting factor in production, scaling up will happen quite quickly. Looking to larger 20hl  tanks to facilitate staple beers and the existing, smaller 12hl tanks to facilitate experimental and seasonals Black Kettle has their sights set high in making an impact on the BC Craft Beer Scene.

2014_01_BMBC-0571The location of Black Kettle is tucked away and seemingly random but looking at the high-rise developments in the surrounding area it will only become busier and busier as time goes by. North Vancouver’s fourth craft brewery is up and running – all you need to do is stop by and give their beer a try!

The Black Kettle Brewery’s hours of operation are Tuesday – Saturday from 11AM – 7PM.
