Tofino Brewing Co. – Kelp Stout Review

Tofino is a West Coast Beach town and when wading through the world famous surf is of course Kelp. Why not brew with it right? The Kelp Stout is a winter seasonal beer from the Tofino Brewing Company and is another west coast twist on a classic brew. This beer pours with three fingers of fluffy head atop a near black coloured stout. The aroma is of toasted chestnuts, chocolate and what is almost a lickerish note. The flavour is dark with a briny texture coming across quite salty in the front. The salt mellows slightly near the finish allowing a toasted malt and light chocolate flavours to creep through. The saltiness remains in the finish along side the dry chocolate. This is a unique west coast beer but is rather salty. Share a bottle and it is enjoyable, drink the whole thing alone and it may be a little much.

Alcohol – 7.5%

I really wanted to like the beer. A microbrew, made on the Island, and with kelp!! Alas, though I am a fan of dark beer, I find the beer *too* strong/sharp/something. (Sorry I’m not up on my beer lingo, but “strong” is probably the best word I can come up with right now.) Very similar in taste to Philips Double Chocolate Porter, but more intense…*lots* of bite! It tastes “well made”, but just more than I bargained for.
