Longwood Brewery Winter's Own Weizenbock Review

Longwood Brewery – Winter’s Own Weizenbock Review

A big German Weizenbock is just what winter prescribed and Nanaimo’s Longwood Brewery has come out with the Winter’s Own with that in mind. This bottle is adorned with a fantastic piece of art resembling the face of Old Man WInter in meticulous detail (bottle design by Hired Guns Creative). The beer pours an amber colour and is topped with a finger of head which disperses rather quickly and without a trace. The smell is characteristically German with big malts and wheats along with notes of tropical fruit, coriander and winter spice. The flavour is relatively light and flavourful with subtle warming spice tones. A big malted base starts up at the front with wheat notes and spice building afterwards. A slightly creamy texture smooths the German style beer and leaves the palate with a malty finish and a slight hop. For a winter beer this is strong but not too strong, flavourful but not too flavourful and most of all delicious. This may not be a beer that screams winter but it is a strong beer that just about anyone can enjoy regardless of bias or taste preference – it has something for just about everyone.
