Four Winds Brewing Co. – Bottle Conditioned Saison Brett Review

In the second bottle conditioned offering from the Four Winds Brewing Company is the Saison Brett. This is a unique Saison which is aged in red wine barrels before being sealed in a corked, 750ml bottle. The Saison Brett pours a golden-straw colour into the glass erupting with four fingers worth of head which settles slowly leaving thick lacing on the glass. The head is so full that pouring this beer properly is actually quite challenging. The smell emanating from this beer is rather sour. A wild, sour ale tone creates a sharp and unique fragrance along side a light oakiness and crisp nature. The beer touches the tongue with a strong carbonation and a crisp front. This builds into a slightly sour body reminiscent of a Berlinerweise or other, mild sour but with much more body. As the taste progresses a smooth and oaky finish comes into play smoothing out the whole ensemble and leaving an almost vanilla like creaminess on the tongue. The flavour profile of this saison has three distinct stages and is very unique. While the sour tones may be slightly off-putting for some the smooth finish and complex flavour profile is quite enjoyable. This is not your typical saison and for that reason everyone should give it a try to see what Four Winds has created in this bottle conditioned craft beer offering.

To bad the brewery is out of this. Once I had one bottle I went back for two more, one more for me and one for the cellar for next year.
