Bridge Brewing 2015 Grinch Winter Ale ReviewBridge Brewing Co. – 2015 The Grinch Winter Ale Review

The name of the Bridge Brewing Grinch Winter Ale hasn’t changed over the last few years but the beer definitely has. While the 2013 Grinch was a ginger and winter spiced number the 2015 version has shifted its profile. From the bomber sized bottle this 6.5% and 26 IBU beer pours as a dark brown colour similar to a Stout. Topped with two full fingers of off-white, lacing head an aroma of caramel, light coffee and toasted malts come from the beer in a wintery, but naturally flavoured beer without any spice additives. A mid body frames a flavour of lightly burnt malt and coffee along side a toffee like mild-sweetness. With the burnt tones comes a smokiness that adds to the body, intensifies the flavours and gives a very dry finish to the beer. The Grinch is a Winter Ale by all accounts but not the spice medley that is often attributed to the style this is more of a lightly smoked Stout with tasty toffee, caramel and coffee tones to warm you into the new year.

untitled-9787-2Former Bridge Brewing The Grinch Winter Ale Review:

Bridge Brewing has recently given up their nano-brewery status for the bigger micro-brewery classification. The final brew before using the new up-scaled equipment is the Grinch, a very dark, winter ale. This beer is nearly black in color with a smidgen of light shining through. The beer pours with a thin finger of head settling with light lacing left behind on the glass. The Grinch smells of toasted malt and  chocolate with nutmeg and cinnamon spice lingering in a smooth and malty package. Tasting this beer it starts off light and malty with a moderate carbonation. The flavour profile builds into a big, ginger body along with a chocolate centre and a light orange-peel note to add a twist. The finish is rather dry with lingering chocolate flavours, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon. This beer is smooth, flavourful and a great addition to the Bridge Brewing bottled lineup. Comparing the 2013 to the 2014 brew the big difference here is Ginger, the idea may be similar but with the addition of ginger comes big spice and a different twist on a dark, winter ale.
