Black Loon Brewing – Bushman Lager Review

The Bushman Lager is pegged as the beer for ‘deep in the bush’ and with a can adorned with Canadian plaid and a deer’s rack that even Red Green would be proud of this beer is playing to the heartstrings of a specific segment of the BC beer market. Pouring an Amber Colour with a decent 2+ fingers of head that are left crawling up the sides of the glass the appearance of such a rough beer is surprisingly good. The aroma is lightly sweet with a malted back. Nothing stands out as totally unique but the aroma is not displeasing given the price of the affordable 6-pack. The flavour is on the good side of typical for an affordable 6-pack lager. The slightly sweeter than average flavour helps to balance out the harshness that can be attributed to many of this beers competitors. The flavour is lightly toasted with minimal hops. The malted base is source to the flavour and overall the Bushman is not half bad. If you are heading out on a hunting trip in the ‘deep of the bush’ this is a beer that may just fit your needs perfectly.

Alcohol – 5.6%
Size – 355ml
Price – $7.99 – 6 Pack (BCL)

This beer is made by Molson/Coors. The Bushman Lager is an apparent attempt to create a value brand within the Craft Beer classification but at a lower price point than the GIB offerings. You will find no reference to this on the can though and this claim can not be confidently substantiated.

Commercial Description:

This crisp, all-natural lager is clear as a mountain lake. And at 5.6%, it’s burly as a BC bushman. One sip, and you’re the grizzly whisperer. The mud man. The longbeard. The bushwacking backwoods sasquatch wrangler. So enjoy. Because out here only the strong survive.

I don’t know if this can be Granville Island as it is not brewed on Granville Island. All other GIB beer is brewed by Molson coors plants. One site says it’s brewed in Kelowna and the other delta. Who knows

I would like to know why Bushman beer is not available in Kelowna. It used to be available couple years ago. I liked its flavor and price was right.
