Phillips Brewing Co. – Twisted Oak Stillage Rum Barrel-Aged Red Ale Review

As the second beer to be branded using the Twisted Oak Stillage Barrel Reserve mouthful of a name. This is a Red Ale with a shot of Rum attached. Pouring a deep copper-red colour topped with two fingers of head this Phillips beer smells strongly of oak, caramel and toasted malt along side a tantalizing dark rum deliciousness. Much like the Twisted Oak Scotch Ale the barrel-aging has been light and simply adds a hint of oak and rum while letting the malts shine strong. The taste is smooth and mellow but holds a level of sophistication that is unrivaled. While most barrel aged beers tend to be a tad overpowering this gives the best of a quality Red Ale merged with a hint of rum-infusion. Whether you are a barrel-aged fanatic or new to the idea this is a great beer to hunt down and pick up a few bottles. Drink one bottle now and cellar a few for the next couple of years. It will only get better with age.
