Driftwood Brewery – Belle Royale Sour Cherry Wild Ale Review

Driftwood has a second sour out on the shelves and it is called the Belle Royale Sour Cherry Wild Ale. This beer is topped with a single finger or pinkish head above a slightly opaque dark-cream soda coloured beer. Let’s just say this ale doesn’t look typical if you are used to a pilsner or an ipa. The smell is quite sour with a bit of cherry-sweetness and oak that balances the sour-sharpness. Brace yourself before tasting as with most sours this hits a little hard. The flavour starts off with a crisp, sharp front and a carbonated bubbly-ness. This builds into an Oaked main body paired with sweet cherry and a lingering sourness. This sour is more mellow than the Mad Bruin that was recently reviewed and has a higher drinkability factor. The Cherry works well to balance sweet and sour while the oak levels it all out. If you are sour-curious and want to wet your toes grab a bottle of the Belle Royal and share it with a friend.

Have you tried anything from Cascade brewing from Oregon? They make some amazing sours. Only available south of the border.
