Parallel 49 Brewing Co. – Vow of Silence Belgian Strong Ale Review

The Vow of Silence is a murky chestnut colour with three full fingers of slow to disperse head. The smell is strong and smooth with malted notes and an almost peaty back. Tasting this beer it is about as strong as you would expect given the smell. It is also smooth though, which is nice giving the 9.8 ABV rating a downplayed strength. The beer builds from the start into a sweetened malt. This sweetness lingers through the body and is complimented in the finish with a slightly sour contrast. This beer is complex and in your face with a beyond average flavour profile. This is not a beer for everyone but if you have a soft spot for a Belgian strong ale this is actually quite good!

Alcohol – 9.8%
Size – 650ml
Price – $5.80 (Brewery)
This is a seasonal beer (January 2013 Release)

It is strong, but no where near what I was expecting from a 9.5% beer. Went down nice and smooth, too smooth in fact because the rest of the night was a blur.
