Cannery Brewing Co. – Blackberry Porter Review

Cannery Brewing is an Okanagan based brewery so it seemingly makes sense when they pair nectarines, blueberries or blackberries with their beer. The Blackberry Porter fits into that category. This beer is a very dark brown colour with very little light finding its way through the glass. The head is thick and dark, clinging to the glass as it settles at a moderate pace. When the label says “small brewery, big flavour” it sounds a little gimmicky but the smell coming off this beer is in full agreeance. The aroma is sweetened with blackberry notes which come off so strong that nothing else really pops out. The flavour actually has less fruit to it than you may expect given the smell but it is by no means subtle. The Blackberry front is paired with a decent tasting typical porter but the subtlety of that is lost through the fruit sweetness. Someone that really enjoys fruit beers may find this to be bliss but it is just a little too far out of left field for my taste buds.

Have to admit, didn’t love this one either. Might make a nice ice cream float beer though?
