Russell Brewing Co. – Truth Serum Wheat Wine Ale Review

From Russell Brewing Company’s Brewmaster series of beers comes the Truth Serum Wheat Wine Ale. This opaque beer shines a cloudy golden colour and is topped with a single finger of head. The head is dense and settles leaving a very thick residue on the glass. Smelling this beer citrus notes and a European style hop stand out in a relatively mild aroma. A malted back is present with a mild amount of wheat smell peaking through. The taste is much stronger than the smell suggests. This is not completely unexpected though as the bottle boasts a 70IBU and 10% ABV. The flavour’s strength comes in the form of a floral, wheatie and strongly hopped ale. The finish is full of hop and is quite dry giving  a crisp, bitter palate. This is a strong beer that could come off as being quite offensive to the un-expecting beer-drinker. For a Wheat Wine ale though it is relatively smooth and easy drinking. The strong hop flavour contrasts the other strong suits giving balance that can otherwise be missing.
