Fernie Brewing Co. – Sap Sucker Maple Porter Review

The Sap Sucker Maple Porter is a truly Canadian beer from the Fernie Brewing Company. Brewed with real maple syrup in this seasonal brew a bit of the East comes to BC in a dark and intriguing craft Porter. The Sap Sucker is a nearly black, deep brown colour that pours into the glass with three full fingers of erupting head. The smell is of deeply toasted malt with maple-sweetness notes through and through. The taste is dark, full and thick. A heavy porter flavour is paired with a caramel-maple sweetness that adds some balance and a dynamic taste to the beer. The sweetness is apparent and not difficult to pick out but overall is still quite mellow. The maple does not take over the beer but being in a rather dark beer, allows the other toasted, traditional bits of the porter style to emerge. Overall the Sap Sucker Maple Porter is relatively sweet and plays a card contrary to Porter tradition but it makes a great treat which is truly Canadian.
