Overview

  • Brewery: Phillips Brewing Co.
  • Beer Style: Barley Wine, Barrel Aged
  • Pros:

The smoothest way to derail a train

  • Cons:

Barley Wine is an aquired taste.

  • Conclusion:

Big and bold Barley Wine with the added kick of oak.

The Trainwreck Barrel Aged Barley Wine is close to being as stiff as beer can come. It pours into the glass as a deep brown topped with a couple of fingers of head. The smell is where things get interesting. It is best to waft this beer rather than stick your nose right in there as this is a potent potable. The smell is strong of a bourbon whiskey and tickles the sinuses with an intense 10% alcohol rating. The flavour here is full on; it is strong and will hit you upside the face if you are not ready for it. While this is the case for many barley wine-style beers, the Trainwreck is actually fairly smooth and creamy in its flavour. The bourbon and extra-strong ale notes are masked slightly by the texture and mellowness that comes later on. If you don’t like strong beer or whiskey you will not like this beer. If you have a little bit of adventure tucked up your beer-sleeve though you may just find this to be one of the most enjoyable barley-wines out there.
