Big River Brewing Co. – Old Curly Stout Review

The Big River Brewing Co. recently launched their new line of beers under brewmaster Michael Stewart. One of the highlights in this line of beers was the stout. Tasting it at the launch event I remember a reasonably light and drinkable stout with notes of chocolate and caramel. In reviewing the bottle, this stout compares in contrast. It is a near pitch black in colour and poured with no  head. This lack of head make me question the integrity of this particular bottle but inquiry with the brewery did not lead me anywhere. The smell is light with chocolate notes and touches of coffee and caramel. Tasting the beer it is again drinkable, notes of chocolate, coffee and caramel lead the tongue up to a bittered hop finish. Overall paralleling the lack of head the beer was very mildly carbonated.

While the beer was quite nice at the brewery this bottle was sub-par and did not live up to the reputation that I remember. At this point in time I question the bottling technique of Big River but still recommend going to the brewery itself for a taste. The beer on tap seems to be at a much higher standard than the bottled beer.
