Phillips Brewing Co. – Puzzler Belgian Black IPA (2012) Review

The Puzzler is a collaboration of east and west. The Phillips Brewing Co and the Great Lakes Brewery teamed up to create something special. This beer is a black hole sucking in the light. The black colour is topped with a thick and brown coloured head. Through this head comes a strong toasted hop aroma and the sense that this is going to knock you on your feet. The flavour starts off with less bang than you may expect. it has a decent hop to it but remains very drinkable. This hop flavour builds into a lightly smokey, dark and smooth flavour. For coming in at a massive 9.1% the Extra-Strong Ale is surprisingly mellow and drinkable. You may not drink the whole bottle to yourself but shared with a friend this is a great tasting, conversation starting beer.
