Steamworks Brewing Co. – Pumpkin Ale Review

For 2015 the Steamworks Pumpkin Ale has been re-thought on the lighter side of things. The basis for the beer is similar but the goal was to keep beer up front and augment with Pumpkin. The result is an amber coloured beer that pours with one thin finger of head. Quickly settling and not-leaving any signs of lacing behind the Steamworks Pumpkin Ale has a malty, caramel tone that is joined with a pumpkin spice tone that is reminiscent of pumpkin pie but without being splat in your face. The body is fairly light and has a lightly toasted tone to the flavour that builds into a mid-sweet pumpkin spice. Notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger fill the palate while a smidgen of the beer-base still makes its way through. The Steamworks Pumpkin Ale is a fairly sweet beer with a fair dose of spice but does not go over the top like some other beers may.

2013 Steamworks Pumpkin Ale Review

Seemingly late to the Halloween party Steamworks has come out with a Pumpkin ale to add to their already stacked deck. Perhaps they weren’t late but rather just not available readily? The Steamworks Pumpkin Ale has a thick head and a chestnut-brown hue. The aroma is of pumpkin, nutmeg and cumin giving a sweet and spicy impression. Tasting the beer give a starting taste that is darker than most with strong toasted notes. The pumpkin flavour tastes caramelized leaving the spicy notes to play backup behind the lightly burnt flavour. This toasted flavour lingers right to the finish giving a bitter and burnt aftertaste. The burnt flavour could be a touch more mellow for my taste buds but it is nice to taste yet another delicious twist on a seasonal brew.
