Phillips Brewing Co. – Pandamonium 11th Hour Anniversary Ale Review

The 11th Hour Ale is a double IPA brewed to commemorate the 11th anniversary of this fine Victoria based brewery. Fittingly it rings in at the ridiculous alcohol level of 11%. similarly the beer contains 11 hop varieties that were added and boiled for 111 minutes bringing this beer to a whopping 111 IBU. As Phillips says, “Mutant pandas would want it this way.” The colour of the beer is rather light as a transparent gold the is capped with a mid-thick head. The smell is rich of hops with a bit of citrus to contrast, the smell is strong and evident of the high alcohol content.

Tasting this beer is similar to marching into flavour country. The taste is strong, bold and in-your-face. Floral notes combat the strong hopped flavour with an almost wheat-wine flavour coming through. It is very clear that this is an extremely strong beer. The hops are quite piney but are complimented with the citrus notes. Dare I say that this beer is a little overboard? While the flavour is good and the beer smooth, sometimes I feel that the knob is only meant to go up to 10, that 11th notch may just deteriorate the more delicate notes.
